Moonshade Privacy Policy
Version 1.0 · Effective October 5, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Moonshade app (“Moonshade” or the “App”) handles information. The App is provided by Patrick Böttge (sole proprietor), Ferdinand-Rhode-Str. 5, 04107 Leipzig, Germany (“we”, “us”), [email protected].
Summary
- Moonshade calculates all eclipse times on your iPhone. Your location and saved places stay on your device. We have no access to them.
- Only the cloud forecast (Pro, off by default) sends data, and only after you turn it on: your saved places, rounded to about 1 km, go to Apple WeatherKit when you open the App, at most every 3 hours per place. Apple states that it does not link these requests to you; nothing is sent to us.
- No account, no ads, no tracking, no sale or sharing of personal information.
1. Information stored on your device
Stored only on your iPhone:
- your saved places (name, coordinates, elevation) and alarm settings;
- your most recent location while the App needs it for display;
- settings (for example appearance, red light mode, audio guide voice);
- your confirmation of the safety notes and the Terms of Use (version and time), your purchase status, the paywall version and the time of your purchase.
In the United States, the App asks for an age range through Apple’s Declared Age Range API. The result is used on your device only and is not stored or sent to us.
To delete this information, delete the App or use Settings › “Delete all data”. You can export your places (JSON) in Settings.
2. Location
If you allow it (“While Using the App”), Moonshade uses your location to calculate eclipse times for where you are. The calculation runs entirely on your iPhone and your location is not sent to us. Without permission, you can choose your spot on the map. You can change the permission at any time in iOS Settings.
The map is provided by Apple (MapKit). When map tiles load, Apple receives the map area you are viewing under Apple’s privacy policy. The path of totality and coastlines are built into the App and work offline.
3. Cloud forecast (Apple WeatherKit, optional, Pro)
The cloud forecast is off by default. Only if you turn it on in Settings (the App explains what is sent when you do) does Moonshade request expected cloud cover from Apple WeatherKit, as follows:
- Only for your saved places, never for your live GPS location. If you saved your current location as a place, that saved point is used.
- Each place is rounded to two decimal places (0.01°, about 1 km) before it is sent to Apple.
- Only when you open the App and view a screen with the forecast, at most every 3 hours per place; in between, the App shows the cached value with the time it was fetched. The App does not fetch anything in the background.
- Only while the eclipse time is within Apple’s 10-day forecast (at the earliest about 10 days before) until the eclipse ends at that place.
- Nothing is sent to us; the request goes directly from your iPhone to Apple.
According to Apple, WeatherKit requests are not associated with personal information and are not tracked across requests (https://developer.apple.com/weatherkit/). The App keeps forecasts only briefly on your iPhone. If you turn the cloud forecast off again, the App stops fetching. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the cloud forecast you turned on); without turning it on, nothing is sent. Weather data: Apple Weather, legal attribution and data sources: https://developer.apple.com/weatherkit/data-source-attribution/.
4. Links
Links to official travel and safety advice open in your browser. The privacy policies of those websites apply.
5. Purchases
Apple processes all purchases. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details, only aggregated sales reports that do not identify you.
6. Contact
If you email us, we use your email address and message only to answer you and delete them when your request is resolved, unless we must keep them by law. Email provider: Apple (iCloud Mail), Apple Distribution International Ltd., Ireland.
7. No tracking, analytics or advertising
Moonshade contains no analytics, crash-reporting, advertising or tracking technology. We do not “sell” or “share” personal information as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA).
8. Your rights
You can view, export and delete your data in the App at any time. If you are in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you have the rights under Articles 15–21 GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection) to the extent we process personal data, and you may lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. If you are a California resident, you have the rights under the CCPA/CPRA; because we do not collect personal information through the App, there is usually nothing for us to disclose or delete.
9. Children
The App is rated 4+ and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
10. Changes
We will update this policy when the App changes and show the new effective date.
