Ringleaf Terms of Use
Version 1.0 · Effective October 5, 2026 · Health references as of September 29, 2026
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Patrick Böttge, Ferdinand-Rhode-Str. 5, 04107 Leipzig, Germany (“we”, “us”), the provider of the Ringleaf app (“Ringleaf” or the “App”). They are also the license agreement for the App (custom EULA).
IF YOU LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES, PLEASE READ SECTION 12 CAREFULLY. IT REQUIRES YOU TO RESOLVE DISPUTES WITH US THROUGH INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION AND WAIVES CLASS ACTIONS AND JURY TRIALS, UNLESS YOU OPT OUT WITHIN 30 DAYS. Section 12 does not apply to consumers in the EU, the EEA, the United Kingdom or Switzerland (see Section 13).
1. Acceptance and eligibility
By checking the box and tapping “Agree & Continue” in the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
You must be at least 18 years old to use Ringleaf. The default targets in the App are designed for adults. They are not designed for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, for people with kidney disease or for people with an eating disorder. If this applies to you, use Ringleaf only with targets set by your doctor or dietitian, or not at all.
2. What Ringleaf is – and what it is not
Ringleaf is a food diary for two numbers: protein and fiber. You can log food by photo, barcode, text, favorites or manual entry, set daily targets, keep optional notes (for example a medication dose day or how you feel) and create a summary to share with people you choose.
RINGLEAF IS NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE AND DOES NOT PROVIDE MEDICAL, NUTRITIONAL OR DIETETIC ADVICE. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent any disease, does not interpret symptoms and does not tell you whether, when or how much of any medication to take. Suggested targets are general references, not an individual recommendation. The summary PDF is a copy of your own notes, not a medical report.
3. Estimates and data sources
- Photo and text estimates are created on your device by Apple’s on-device language model. They are marked “estimated” (✦) and can be wrong – for example about the food, the amount or the nutrients. You decide whether to save them and can change every value.
- Label reading uses Apple’s on-device text recognition and can misread numbers. Check them against the package.
- Barcode data comes from USDA FoodData Central (Branded Foods, based on manufacturers’ labels) or Open Food Facts, a community database. It can be incomplete, outdated or wrong – for example, fiber is often missing because it is optional on EU labels. Check the package.
- The built-in food list uses rounded values based on USDA FoodData Central. Real foods vary.
You are responsible for checking estimates before you rely on them.
4. Health and safety
- Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before you change what you eat, especially during treatment with a GLP-1 or other medication, if you have kidney, liver or bowel disease, or if you have been told to limit protein or fiber.
- Follow your prescriber’s instructions for any medication. Ringleaf’s dose-day notes are only a log.
- If logging food makes you feel stressed, guilty or controlled, stop using the App and reach out to the support lines listed in Settings › Help & safety.
- In an emergency, call your local emergency number (for example 911 in the US, 999 in the UK, 112 in the EU). Ringleaf does not monitor your entries and cannot help in an emergency.
5. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for the accuracy of what you enter, for checking estimates, for keeping your device secure and for deciding with whom you share exports. You may not use the App for anyone else’s health data without their permission.
6. License
We grant you a non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use the App on any Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions (including Family Sharing where enabled). You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, resell or distribute the App except as permitted by law.
7. Subscriptions and purchases
Ringleaf Pro is offered as a yearly subscription (with a free trial where shown), a monthly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. Purchases are processed and billed by Apple as our agent (in the United States) or sold by Apple (in other regions, including the EU, the UK and Switzerland). Prices are shown in the App before you buy. A free trial is available once per Apple Account and only where the App shows it. A subscription renews automatically at the price shown until you cancel it in your Apple Account settings at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. A free trial converts to a paid subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before it ends. If you choose, the App reminds you before a free trial ends; for yearly subscriptions it reminds you about 30 days before renewal (Settings › Ringleaf Pro). You can manage or cancel your subscription and request a refund from Apple in the App (Settings › Ringleaf Pro) or in your Apple Account. Refunds are handled by Apple under its policies. A purchase gives you access to App features; it does not buy any health result.
8. Third-party services
Apple Health, Open Food Facts and your email or messaging apps are provided by third parties under their own terms. We are not responsible for their availability or content. The Open Food Facts database is available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
9. Changes to the App
We may change, add or remove features, food data and estimates, and we provide updates to keep the App working and secure. We will not remove features you have paid for during a running subscription period without an equivalent replacement, unless the law or Apple requires it. Section 13 applies to consumers in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SECTION 13, AND TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, RINGLEAF AND ALL ESTIMATES, TARGETS, FOOD DATA AND EXPORTS ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE DISCLAIM ALL EXPRESS AND IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
11. Limitation of liability
EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN SECTION 13, AND TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF, OR RELIANCE ON, RINGLEAF. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO RINGLEAF IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR RINGLEAF IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM OR (B) US$50.
THIS SECTION DOES NOT LIMIT LIABILITY FOR DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY CAUSED BY OUR NEGLIGENCE, FOR FRAUD, GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, FOR VIOLATIONS OF LAW WHERE A LIMITATION IS NOT PERMITTED (FOR EXAMPLE UNDER CALIFORNIA CIVIL CODE § 1668), OR FOR ANY OTHER LIABILITY THAT CANNOT BE LIMITED UNDER APPLICABLE LAW.
New Jersey residents. If you live in New Jersey, the following do not apply to you to the extent New Jersey law does not permit them: (a) the disclaimer of express and implied warranties in Section 10, (b) the exclusion of indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary and punitive damages in Section 11, and (c) the cap on our total liability in Section 11. Nothing in these Terms limits any rights you have under the New Jersey Punitive Damages Act, the New Jersey Products Liability Act, the New Jersey Uniform Commercial Code or the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act. All other parts of Sections 10 and 11 apply to you.
12. Dispute resolution for US residents: arbitration and class action waiver
This Section applies only if you live in the United States.
12.1 Informal resolution first. Before starting any claim, you and we agree to send the other a written notice describing the individual claim and the relief requested (to us: [email protected]). We will try to resolve it within 60 days.
12.2 Binding individual arbitration. If the dispute is not resolved within 60 days, any dispute arising out of or relating to Ringleaf or these Terms will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules and, where they apply, its Mass Arbitration Supplementary Rules. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this Section 12. The arbitration may take place by video or in the county where you live.
12.3 Small claims. Either party may instead bring an individual claim in small-claims court if it qualifies.
12.4 Fees. We will pay all AAA filing, administration and arbitrator fees, except the consumer filing fee set by the AAA rules.
12.5 WAIVER OF CLASS ACTIONS AND JURY TRIAL. YOU AND WE EACH WAIVE THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL AND TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY CLASS, COLLECTIVE OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION OR ARBITRATION. A court, not an arbitrator, decides whether this waiver is enforceable and any dispute about mass-filing procedures.
12.6 Public injunctive relief. Any request for public injunctive relief will be decided by a court after the individual arbitration ends, and that court action is stayed while the arbitration is pending.
12.7 Severability. If any part of this Section 12 is found unenforceable for a claim, that claim (and only that claim) proceeds in court, and the rest of Section 12 remains in effect.
12.8 Opt-out. You may opt out of this Section 12 within 30 days after you first accept these Terms by emailing [email protected] with your name and the statement “I opt out of arbitration.” Opting out does not affect any other part of these Terms.
13. Consumers in the EU, the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland
If you are a consumer living in the EU, the EEA, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, this Section applies and takes precedence over any conflicting sentence in these Terms:
- No arbitration. Section 12 does not apply. You can bring claims before the courts that are competent under the law, including the courts where you live.
- Your statutory rights stay. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live, including your statutory rights for digital products (for example updates and remedies if the App does not work as agreed) and your rights under Apple’s refund policies.
- Liability. Sections 10 and 11 do not apply. We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under product liability law and where we gave a guarantee. For slight negligence we are liable only for breach of an obligation that is essential for the proper performance of the contract and on which you may regularly rely, and only up to the damage typical and foreseeable at the time the contract was made. In the United Kingdom, nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence (Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 65) or your statutory rights for digital content (section 47).
- Governing law. German law applies, without the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. This choice does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live (Art. 6(2) Rome I Regulation; for the UK, the equivalent retained rule).
- German version. For consumers in Germany, the German “Nutzungsbedingungen” also apply and are equally binding.
14. Governing law (outside Section 13)
For users not covered by Section 13, the Federal Arbitration Act and the laws of the State of New York govern these Terms, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. This choice does not deprive you of any protection that the law of your state of residence makes mandatory.
15. Changes to these Terms
We will notify you in the App of material changes and ask you to accept them before you continue using the App. Changes do not apply to disputes you notified us of before the change.
16. Apple as third-party beneficiary and other Apple terms
- Parties. These Terms are between you and us only, not with Apple Inc. (“Apple”). We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the App and its content.
- Maintenance and support. We are solely responsible for maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for the App.
- Warranty. To the extent any warranty has not been effectively disclaimed, we, not Apple, are responsible for it. If the App fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the App.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the App or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to conform to any legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws, including in connection with HealthKit.
- Intellectual property. If a third party claims that the App or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of that claim.
- Legal compliance. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with applicable third-party terms (for example, your wireless data agreement) when using the App.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. Once you accept them, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.
17. General
If any provision of these Terms is unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Ringleaf. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a transfer of the App, provided your rights are not reduced.
